Daytime navigation course - 4 weeks
For beginners, every Thursday daytime 1000 to 1300 for 4 weeks

This short course will build navigation skills from the beginning. Starting with an indoor session, it will build every week in a bite size manner. This allows time for reviewing and absorbing information. With small and friendly groups it will be a fun, weekly experience with like minded people. These sessions are all in or near Kendal. Lift sharing can be organised if required. Perfect for those that have their daytime to be freer or have not got the luxury of giving up a weekend to learn navigation. What will we be learning? Thursday 28th September Meeting at: Fold cafe in Kendal An indoor session learning about: What we need to consider before going out What we need to wear and take with us The map, the symbols - what does it all mean? Planning a route for the following week A short session outside looking at features Thursday 5th October Meeting at: Serpentine woods, Queen's Road, Kendal. We will execute our route that we planned the previous week. As we go along we will learn about what we can use as reliable features and how we can use them to make our next decision. We will look at different navigation strategies and decide which ones work in different scenarios. Thursday 12th October Meeting at: The Helm We will start to combine all the strategies we've learnt in the previous two weeks to do a circular route of The Helm. We will use a combination of the strategies to go from point to point. Thursday 19th October Meeting at: Scout Scar (Brigsteer Road) The final week will focus on making decisions autonomously. This will help to build confidence in your own abilities to go walking and navigating by yourself or with friends or family. What will I need to bring? For week one you can come in comfortable indoor clothes, bring some money with you so you can grab a coffee. A rucksack Warm layers (and a spare in your bag) Waterproof top and bottom Boots Gloves and a warm hat Minimum 1 litre of water, and/or hot drink in a flask for cold days. Food Bring your own map and compass if you have one, no worries if not. I have plenty. This course is non refundable so please check your diaries thoroughly to make sure you can make it every week before signing up. It would be appreciated if you were prompt for each session considering their length.
