We will start the day with a coffee and an indoor navigation session (approximately 1.5 hours) and then spend the rest of the day outdoors putting into practise what we have learnt already. The day will end at around 4pm. Who is this for? An introduction to navigation for beginners. A perfect day for folks to learn some new skills, get confident with map reading and being outdoors. This day will suit folks that have no previous experience of map reading or navigation. What we will be learning? We will : - Begin to understand the symbols on the map and what they mean - Look at different strategies for effective map reading - Build your confidence (skill and confidence go hand in hand) - Measuring distances on a map - Using the distance measure to calculate how long it takes us to walk - Make a route card to follow for the day What do I need to bring? A rucksack Warm layers (and a spare in your bag) Waterproof top and bottom Boots Gloves and a warm hat Minimum 1 litre of water, and/or hot drink in a flask for cold days. Food Bring your own map and compass if you have one Please email if you'd like to borrow anything Where will we meet? Wilf's cafe In Staveley Mill Yard (LA8 9LR), there's plenty of free parking.
