Advanced Winter Navigation Days: Lake District & Scotland Ready to take your navigation skills to the next level? This Advanced Winter Navigation Days are designed for those who already navigate confidently in summer and are looking to sharpen their skills for winter conditions. We welcome women and underrepresented groups, including people of colour and LGBTQIA+ folks, to join us in an inclusive and supportive space as we delve deeper into the challenges of winter mountain navigation. Winter navigation presents unique obstacles—low visibility, challenging terrain, and unpredictable conditions. This course will equip you with the advanced tools and techniques to navigate effectively in winter, so you can explore the mountains year-round with confidence and precision. We’ll work with a range of maps and scales, including: 1:25k, 1:40k, and 1:50k maps Ordnance Survey and Harvey’s maps You’ll develop a thorough understanding of how to interpret these maps in winter landscapes, where snow cover and shifting terrain can obscure familiar landmarks. We’ll focus on advanced techniques, such as micro-navigation, compass skills in poor visibility, and the use of altimeters, pacing, timing and practicing in featureless terrain. You’ll also learn how to adapt your summer navigation methods to the challenges of winter, ensuring you can plan safe routes, make sound decisions, and stay on track even in the harshest conditions. The course is tailored to advanced navigators, but we still focus on having fun in a welcoming learning environment. I will guide you through a variety of real-world scenarios in the mountains, helping you apply what you’ve learned in a practical setting. Whether you're an experienced mountain walker or simply looking to refine your winter navigation skills, this is a perfect opportunity to deepen your knowledge and meet others who share your passion for adventure.
