Summer

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and experience the stunning beauty of the Lake District. Whether you’re completely new to the outdoors or already familiar with mountain adventures, there’s something for everyone.

 

I offer a range of courses designed to help you build skills, confidence, and a deeper connection with the mountains. From beginner and advanced navigation courses to hill skills and mountain skills, you’ll learn everything you need to feel more at home in the hills. It’s not just about practical techniques – it’s about experiencing the joy of the outdoors, learning to move confidently through wild landscapes, and unlocking the freedom that the mountains bring.  

 

Based (mainly) in the Lake District, these summer courses are designed with you in mind, embracing a person-centred approach that focuses on your individual needs, emotions and goals.  Through a combination of coaching, teaching, facilitation, and instruction, I provide a systematic and staged learning experience that lays solid foundations for your outdoor adventures. You'll not only learn the practical skills required, but also develop the confidence to continue your outdoor journey long after the course ends. What course?

Introduction to Navigation

Perfect for beginners, this course teaches the fundamental skills of map reading, compass use, and route planning to get you started on your navigation journey with confidence.  

 

Improvers Navigation

Designed for those with some navigation skills, maybe you use apps on your phone and ‘know a bit’ and perhaps have a few gaps in knowledge.   This course focuses on advanced techniques, including compass use, contour interpretation and navigating in more challenging conditions.  

 

Mountain Navigation

This course equips you with the skills to navigate confidently in complex mountain terrain, covering poor visibility strategies, advanced compass work, and interpreting the landscape.  

 

Day to Night Navigation (other night navigation courses can be found here)

Walking into the night, starting out in daylight to build or revisit navigation skills and continue  building confidence into the evening.  Perfect for those looking to expand their skills for all-hours adventures.  

 

Hill Skills (Accredited by Mountain Training) 

A two day accredited course designed to teach essential skills for safe and enjoyable hillwalking, including navigation, weather awareness, and route planning. Ideal for beginners and those looking to grow their confidence.  

 

Mountain Skills (Accredited by Mountain Training)

An accredited course for those wanting to learn navigation, weather, planning, walking skills in the mountains. challenging terrain.  A great stepping stone for folks looking at developing skills and confidence or thinking about qualifications.

Location, Transport, accommodation

Lake District

Location

There are various meeting points for each course; please refer to the specific course details.

 

Transport

Drive:  The M6 runs to the east of the Lake District, take J36 and A590 for the southern end of the Lake District.  Take J40 and A66 or A592 for the northern end of the Lake District.  The roads can be slow, small and winding so please allow extra time for travel.

Train: Trains between London’s Euston and Glasgow/Edinburgh stop at Penrith (North Lakes) and Oxenholme The Lake District (just outside of Kendal), from Oxenhome there is a train to Windermere stopping at Staveley. 

Bus: National Express runs coaches to Lancaster, Penrith and Carlisle where you can catch an onward bus connection into the Lake District, Stagecoach provide local services in 2025 fares are capped at £3.

Lift sharing: I strongly encourage lift-sharing whenever possible. If you would like to be connected with others on your course for this purpose, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
