Night Navigation for Beginners - Kendal, Lake District Date & Time: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM Location: Kendal Join us for an exciting night navigation course for beginners. This course is perfect for hikers, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to develop essential navigation skills to confidently explore after dark. We will be learning practical map reading at night including: compass work, and key techniques to stay safe on night adventures. Who is this Course For? Outdoor enthusiasts with basic or limited navigation experience. Walkers and hikers looking to improve their confidence navigating at night. No prior night navigation experience is required, but familiarity with daytime hiking is recommended. What You’ll Learn In this practical and interactive session, you’ll gain hands-on experience with: Map Reading: Learn to read maps under low light, identify key contour features, and plan your route effectively. Compass Skills: Master the basics of compass use, from bearings to orienting the map. Pacing & Timing: Practice estimating distances using pacing and timing techniques essential for night travel. Night Navigation Hazards: Understand the unique risks associated with navigating in darkness and how to mitigate them. Using Torches & Low-Light Vision: How to effectively use head torches and preserve night vision for safer travel. Course Itinerary 5:30 PM: Meet at a designated Kendal location for a brief introduction and overview. 6:00 PM: Head out to local hills (Benson Knott or another local hill) for practical night navigation exercises. 8:45 PM: Debrief and review of key skills learned. 9:00 PM: Course ends; participants return to Kendal. What to Bring Head Torch with spare batteries. Map & Compass: (these can be supplied). Warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy walking boots suitable for uneven terrain. Gloves and hat (it can get chilly at night). Water and snacks. We’ll provide any additional materials and safety gear needed for the session. Cost and Booking Price: £40 per person. Group Size: Limited to 6 participants for a personalised and quality learning experience.
