Are you confident navigating in the mountains during summer but eager to expand your skills for winter? Introduction to Winter Navigation course is designed to help you make that leap, equipping you with the skills to explore the mountains year-round with confidence. We welcome women and underrepresented groups, including people of colour and LGBTQIA+ folks, creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone to learn and grow together. In this course, we’ll focus on essential winter navigation techniques, helping you transition from summer walking to tackling the unique challenges that winter conditions bring. You’ll learn to navigate using a range of different maps and scales, including: 1:25k, 1:40k, and 1:50k scale maps Ordnance Survey and Harvey's maps We’ll explore how to use these maps effectively in winter landscapes, where terrain, visibility, and conditions can be more complex. You’ll also learn practical techniques and tactics to make winter navigation easier and more efficient. This includes understanding how to use a variety of winter-specific equipment that enhances navigation, such as altimeters and compasses better suited to snowy or icy environments. This course is all about building confidence and empowering you to enjoy the mountains year-round. It’s a great opportunity to learn alongside others in a welcoming, fun, and inclusive group setting. Whether you’re just starting your winter journey or looking to refine your skills, this course offers a supportive space for you to develop your abilities in a way that feels comfortable and safe.
