Improvers Navigation Perfect for improvers If you already use OS Maps on your phone but want to build real confidence using a paper map and compass, this Improvers Navigation day is designed for you. It’s a practical, hands-on session focused on developing the skills you need to navigate more independently in the hills. 📅 Sunday 13th September 🕤 9:30 am – approximately 4:00 pm Starting from Keswick, we’ll head out into the surrounding fells and use the day to develop and refine your navigation skills in a real mountain environment. Throughout the day we will focus on: * Measuring distance accurately on a map * Understanding and using timings in the hills * Taking and following simple compass bearings * Relocating yourself when you’re not sure exactly where you are * Building confidence moving away from reliance on phone navigation This is a practical day with lots of time spent outside applying skills in real situations, helping you make the transition from digital navigation to confident map and compass use. Who is this for? This course is ideal if you: * Already use OS Maps or similar apps on your phone * Want to move on to traditional map and compass navigation * Can follow basic routes but want more independence * Are looking to build confidence in hill navigation skills What to bring Please come prepared to be outdoors for the whole day. You will need: * A packed lunch * At least 1 litre of water * Waterproof jacket * Waterproof trousers * A warm layer, such as a fleece * Suitable walking boots or sturdy footwear * Clothing appropriate for the weather forecast What you'll leave with By the end of the day you’ll have a much stronger understanding of how to navigate using a paper map and compass, along with practical experience in distance, timing, bearings, and relocating yourself when things don’t quite go to plan. This is a great next step for anyone looking to move beyond phone-based navigation and become more confident and independent in the hills.
